Preserving and Protecting

Picture
The El Rito Spanish Mustang  'Luz Azul'  (Blue Light)
One of the goals of Monero Mustangs is to preserve and protect the vanishing genetic pool of a historic colonial spanish herd located in the rough mountain country of northern New Mexico just northwest of well known (Georgia O'Keefe Country) Abiquiu NM.

 Sandi Claypool

Visionary, Sandi Claypool, founded Monero Mustangs in 2000, with the help of her mother Ila Bromberg whom has since passed away, and became a non-for-profit in 2003. The mission of Monero Mustangs is to keep alive the genetic pool of the original spanish El Rito mustang. Monero Mustang does this by purchasing and selectively breeding horses to produce the geneticly pure descendants of the original spanish mustang. In addition, Monero Mustang educates the public about the treasure of this regal and adaptive group of mustangs that helped build the west, through wild horse eco- tours and sponsoring select mustangs. A compassion to preserve and protect a small band of vanishing 'El Rito' spanish mustangs propelled the vision of Monero Mustangs. In 2008 Monero Mustangs moved to 'Yellow Hills Ranch' in Tierra Amarilla NM, calling this ranch thier home. Over the years Monero has purchased  more El Rito mustangs, and mustangs from other regions such as, the Placita's, the Pryors, Salt River Maricopa Pima mustangs, along with Navajo mustangs and special individual mustangs.

Why is Preservation and Protection so Important?
With wild mustang herds across the west vanishing, the importance of protecting and preserving wild horses continues to play a vital role on behalf of our wild horses, and afford the public the opportunity to view and experience wild mustangs in thier natural environment. Thus, the continued support of organizations, such as Monero Mustangs is vital to the history of our Nation to tell the story of the role of the horse in the american culture and to preserve thier presence in the future of our Nation.

Our American Mustang has impacted every race and every culture in the building of our Nation. These Iconic Living Legends helped fight our battles, conquer and build settlements in our Nation, deliver our mail, transport doctors to the sick, transported supplies, fought in our nations wars on all sides, and were used for entertainment of the masses even to present time. The symbol of freedom they represent during turbulent times can be a great healer of broken hearts. Mustangs are used in therapuetic settings. The wild mustang is an enduring spirit of our west, and continues to reveal its value whenever given the chance.

Here at Yellow Hills Ranch, the wild mustang has been used to revitalize land that had been overused by livestock, showing that with proper management the wild mustang is an incredible asset to range improvement and sustainability.
